David Raya Backs Squad Depth as Essential to Multiple Trophy Challenge
David Raya has stated that intense competition for first-team spots is driving Arsenal's outstanding performance, with the goalkeeper confident that the squad's depth under Mikel Arteta is so remarkable that they can compete for several trophies throughout the campaign.
Dominant Wins Showcase Arsenal's Strength
The North London club's latest 4-0 triumph over Atlético Madrid marked their sixth straight victory and tenth triumph in a dozen games. Having let in just three goals—a record low at this point in the club's history—they have secured a narrow advantage at the Premier League summit and a perfect record in the Champions League after three matches.
Rotation and Depth Crucial to Success
The goalkeeper has started in nearly every game, aside from one domestic cup encounter, but Arteta has consistently rotated the lineup following heavy spending on recruits. When asked about competing for multiple trophies, Raya responded, "Yes, I think so. Our squad strength is amazing. We have numerous options who can perform in two, three, or four roles."
For instance, against Atlético, Mikel Merino was introduced as a forward and is capable of playing as a No 8 or No 10. That versatility is available to the manager, and he's using it to benefit the team. It's looking very, very good, and that depth is very important for us.
Rivalry Elevates Performance
Raya continued, "That provides an additional edge in practice and games because if you're not at it, your place is at risk in a fraction of a second. It creates healthy competitiveness in training and on the pitch, which is really, really important, and everyone is on board."
Defensive Solidity a Team Achievement
The team have let in just a single goal from regular play this season, and Raya has faced a mere one attempt in their recent victories against Atlético, Fulham, and West Ham.
"It's a collective effort from the striker to the goalie," Raya explained. "Everyone is focused, no one wants to concede, and we aim to intercept passes before it reaches the midfield. If we intercept, it allows a fast break. This is essential for the entire team to understand this mentality, and we're not allowing numerous opportunities, which is perfect."
