Manchester United Set to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for United
The forward, with six months left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
