New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police released video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
