NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, did not confirm his residency plans immediately following his triumph in November.

"My choice was based on the security of my family and the need to focusing all of my focus on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district famous for its abundance of cultural enclaves and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will always live within me and the work I do," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

However his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment far removed from his modest Astoria apartment.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house with views of the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's historical period.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as crucial resources as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.

Data indicated Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
