The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Transformed Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A new initialism emerged a few months into the military campaign against Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is found only in Gaza, according to health professionals such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is rare for physicians to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their whole family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality about the devastating conflict in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of child amputees is greater than that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy in numerous doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with accounts of children being intentionally shot at.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Reported Truce

The Gaza Strip continues to be a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that atrocities are still being committed. The Israeli government has denied these accusations, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, although a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. And this, it seems, is what global togetherness looks like.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, apparently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

Eurovision turns 70 next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. An institution that was originally built on togetherness has devolved into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
