Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

Price's death comes shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including a number of outfits for her US tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry mourns the loss to a genuine innovator whose influence on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
